Jay Roacher – Paradise +Show this Fri W/ Louie Knuxx + Young Lean

Jay’s new album, Cheer Up Jay, is out now via breakin wreckwordz and this is the lead single. Stays true to his subject matter, that depressed, introspective, reflection that’s a common theme throughout his work.

Beat by nettsmoney, reminds me a bit of “Party Trick” off of Young Lean’s worth the wax EP, but again works as a perfect compliment to Jay’s delivery and subject matter.
Video is a bit melodramatic but rounds out the aesthetic nicely.

Anyways, Jay’s doing a show at laundry this fri with louie knuxx & young lean.

Jay Roacher – Jealousy

Once again Jay nails some pretty emo subject matter without coming off like a cock smoker*. no mean feat.
Production by scratch 22 is super nice too.
Jay’s album, Cheer Up Jay, is out soon/now. Most likely through Breakin Wreckwordz, but i keep forgetting to pay attention to that kinda thing.

*The goal is to tread that line between serious blog and youtube comments section.

Again this pairing have come through with the goods.
Jay still miles ahead of 99% of rappers in Australia and NZ and Netts putting out yet another superbly polished piece of music.

Everything coming out of Jay this year has been dope. Cinematic soundscapes coupled with someone who can verbalise melancholy and hopelessness without coming across like a cockhead or teenage girl.

These two are seem like they’re on the cusp of becoming a force to be reckoned with in the Australasian hiphop scene. Everything they’re involved in together has been of a calibre that far exceeds their non-existent budget’

Jay is, by my count, one of the best rappers in either country at the moment (even if he does focus a bit much on battling) with the right balance of technical wordplay and pop sensibilities to still sound good. And polite enough to let Riz Kid go first on this one.

Melbourne based Nettsmoney has a history of crafting solid beats for NZ artists, including a lot on the Breakin Wreckwordz label but seems to be on a bit of a creative bent of late, choosing to create hiphop beats that don’t sound like hiphop beats.

Netts on the video edit for this one too.

Only complaint is my same one about 360/pez yelawolf/rittz doing tracks together. Is there really a point in a guest/collab when they sound similar?

Whether it’s witch-house, a lex luger beat, something out of the Hypnotize Minds camp or just random stuff showing up in my feed, I’m getting a lot of ominous sounding music coming my way. Stuff with the aesthetic of a horror movie score.
Here Nettsmoney goes the Slowed and Thowed route to add some menace to a Jay Roacher track

Breakin Wreckwordz main man in CHCH comes through again. Kid is amazing. 22 on the beats is, I’m assuming, Scratch22 of yesteryear.

Jay Roacher (nee Jaberwockie) is one of a handful of guys from NZ that i think stand up, quality wise, to international standards. Usually on some depressing introspective shit and always with good beat selection, in this case my boy Nettsmoney. I know dubstep is reaching critical mass, but thank christ it’s not on some boom bap feel good shit.
